Craftwork: Gokayama Washi
Gokayama, along with Shirakawa volost, the scenery of the Gassho architecture is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. This area flourished by sericulture and gunpowder production stands with heavy houses with a pragmatic architecture.
Gokayama which is the production area of Gokayama Washi is located at the southwest end of Toyama prefecture and is surrounded by 1,500 m class mountains. In the winter, in the heavy snowy zone with snow accumulation of a couple of meters, the technique called snow roaring was borrowed using the snow cover.
